The Road toward Bach
The German violin school

Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilchviolin | Finland

To this day it is often believed that Johann Sebastian Bach created the first and most important works for solo violin – Sonatas and Partitas. There is no reason to doubt the everlasting importance and genius of Bach’s works, but violinists all over Europe did indeed compose, transcribe and improvise music for solo violin already one and a half centuries before J. S. Bach. The unusually versatile violinist Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch, who is renowned as a solo performer, and leader of orchestras and early music ensembles, has prepared a solo programme which strives to show audiences the path of violin music that had led us to “the Bible of all violinists” – Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin in which the genius created his own unique language of musical expression. Be they wide or narrow, these paths are the compositions of German and Austrian composers who lived and wrote music 150 years before Bach.
