Prince Mikołaj Krzysztof ‘The Orphan’ Radziwiłł (1549–1616) was a Polish-Lithuanian nobleman known as both a cultural and educational sponsor, and a patron of churches, colleges and hospitals. He was a man of high intellect and education, possessed by an ardent desire for self-improvement. In 1582, he embarked on a legendary journey to the Holy Land, during which he travelled through three continents by land and water, through Dalmatia to Zante, Crete, Cyprus, Egypt, Palestine and Syria, before returning home via Venice and Vienna. He documented this pilgrimage in the book ‘Hierosolymitana Peregrinatio’, published in 1601.
The ensemble Ex Silentio, under the leadership of Dimitris Kontouras, immerses us in the soundscape of these faraway lands, spiriting its audience away on a bewitching adventure of time travel, in which different musical worlds coexist in harmonious togetherness.
