The Myth in French Baroque Music

Marie Friederike Schödersoprano (Germany)
Luxurians (Germany)

The strong interest in mythological themes in France in the 1700s can be explained through the fascination felt by Baroque intellectuals and artists for the idealized virtues of the gods. The French Ballet became the perfect artistic playground for the realization of spectacular storytelling, however in the first three decades of the 18th century the Baroque cantata emerged as the main vocal-instrumental genre, stimulating the cultural life at the French Court, yet without the need of costly and extravagant logistics.

Regular performers as soloists, chamber ensemble and baroque orchestra musicians across the globe, the members of the Luxurians collective and the winner of the International J. S. Bach Competition Marie Friederike Schöder will demonstrate how the wealth and drama of musical language can be revealed without additional visual measures. The performers will prove that the cantata is an ideal platform for the expression of artistry, and never before heard verses will transport audiences to a meeting with the gods of Antiquity.
