This year, from September 21 to October 14, the 18th Banchetto
Musicale international festival of early music will take place in Vilnius. As
every year, the festival will present both popular compositions from the medieval,
Renaissance and Baroque periods and works that have never been performed in Lithuania
before.
Many celebrated early music performers from Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Great
Britain and the Baltic states will appear in this year’s festival. The festival will
start with an entertaining performance by the Baltic States Baroque Orchestra, entitled
"Musique de table" (Table music). At Vilnius’ concert halls, churches and the Lėlė
Puppet Theatre, concerts will be given by internationally renowned ensembles, such as Unicorn,
Tetraktys, Café Zimmermann and ensembles of traditional, early and jazz music from Belgium,
and the lute virtuoso Jacob Heringman.
The Brevis Choir and Consort will present two exciting projects. The first one is Orazio
Vecchi’s madrigal comedy L'Amfiparnaso, with well-known Lithuanian actors; and
the other is a programme featuring compositions by Marco Scacchi, a famous composer closely
connected with Lithuanian musical history and the master of the royal chapel of the
Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th century, and his contemporaries. The concert
will be broadcast on Euroradio.
The festival events will be complemented by a masterclass dedicated to Gregorian chant
and choral literature. For four days at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, the
musicologist, conductor and expert on church music Ulrike Heider from Sweden will be sharing
her expertise with Lithuanian and foreign students and professors. In one of the
festival’s concerts, she will also appear as an organist.
The festival's press conference is to be held on September 14 at 11.30 am, at the Lėlė
Puppet Theatre, Arklių g. 5.
The festival is organized by the Public Institution Banchetto
Musicale.
